I was originally developing a plotline where Scab was going to return to school fairly messed up from all the tests done to her by the I.B.W. I wanted to evoke the anime Serial Experiments Lain, but decided to abandon that thread completely in order to simplify what was already too many plot threads for a single book.

The research on emotions that the I.B.W. is doing was mentioned in passing in Book 1, but starts to have a much bigger role in the story from here on out.
